When Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016 for a world-record transfer fee, most pundits questioned his value. Sure, he helped Juventus steamroll to five straight league titles, but was a midfielder really worth that much money?

Well when your name is Ed Woodward and you want a player really badly, then money ceases to be an issue. The chairman decided to buy Pogba before the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona could get their hands on him. But Pogba now cost more than living legends like Cristiano Ronaldo.

For the average American that doesn't have any knowledge of the way soccer players move from team to team, this money seems like an astronomical amount. We see baseball players get this kind of money all the time in contract money, but there isn't usually a straight cash swap for players anymore. In our sports, we usually see players swapped for other players, draft picks or simply having them leave in free agency.

So Paul Pogba made his move and the money changed hands. Now Pogba had to show his worth for United. And my word has he done that. Even though his goal and assist output isn't quite what some would like it to be, the effect that Pogba has had on United is undeniable. Gone are the days under LvG where United played boring and without flair, enter Pogba with his silky skill moves and dabs after scoring.

His connection that he has formed with Zlatan has been crucial to the side. That partnership scored both goals in the victory away at Crystal Palace, a game that without Pogba would likely have been a draw. In a season where every point will end up mattering in the race for Champions League places, games like those were crucially needed.

So has he been worth 90 million? For me, yes. Pogba has been indispensable to the team and when he is absent, the team lacks a certain creativity that leads directly to goals scored. He doesn't have to score 30 goals minimum to be worth it, we already have a goalscorer in Zlatan to fill that role. Pogba is worth the money because he brings something to Manchester United that no other player in the world can.
